Every few weeks the internet gives it to a transplant who – after recently moving to a major city – posts a video, usually to TikTok, complaining about their decision. Well, last week @pinkmaggitsuperstarr, aka Molly Johnson, proclaimed that she absolutely hates New York City, catching the attention of NYC-Tok.

“Overall New York did not chew me up and spit me out,” Johnson, who works in photography notes. “I just don’t like it. I just feel so much happier every time I leave.”

Johnson lists anxiety as one of the main reasons she dislikes NYC, that and the fact that there's nothing to do that's not “a million dollars “ or “getting drunk.”

After her video amassed over 100k views, 3k likes, and countless stitches from angered New Yorkers, Johnson turned off the comments to her video.

Though not all the responses were negative. TikTok creator @criticalens stitched Johnson’s video with his perspective as a former New Yorker encouraging Johnson to “actually try” to enjoy the city.

“You're living in the area with a bunch of bars and weird art, go somewhere else,” he replied.

From museums, and parks, to street fairs and movie theaters, people listed all the things one could do without spending money or drinking. @criticallens even recommended apps like Eventbrite and Skint to find local free events happening nearly every day.

“I literally have decision fatigue when I try making plans in NYC,” says one commenter on @criticallens’ TikTok.

@theturkishbagel, a bartender on TikTok, offered Johnson advice saying, “I’m telling you there's more to do than just drinking. If that’s all you can find that means you made shitty friends.”

@blanca_perdomo These types of transplants are the worse and her “defense” is that ppl who are critizing her “make NY their personality” and that we need to learn individualism. No girl, transplant like YOU make “NY their personality”. As if NYers don’t identify themselves by their boroughs and what street they grew up on. Like you moved to the village, what did you expect? You’re self projecting instead of complaining actually do something like immerse yourself into the community and become advocate for those who don’t have homes. Guess these things weren’t part of your ROMANIZATION OF NEW YORK #nyctransplant #nyctransplantsbelike #gentrificationisreal #gentrifying #newyork #brooklyn #suburbs #walkablecity #manhattan #nyc #nyclove #greenscreenvideo ♬ original sound - Blanca_Perdomo

“You invest time and consideration in your community,” says @theturkishbage, “...It takes a certain personality to live here and a certain personality that values [the city].”

New Yorkers take their trash city very seriously and did not hesitate to cook Johnson for days on the internet over it. This city may be incredibly tough and soul-crushing but you gotta participate.

“New York doesn’t exist to be your playground. You are here as its guest,” concludes @criticallens, “...I wish you more luck wherever the hell you go.”
